Dvd Review: The Promotion (2008)

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?Doug (Seann William Scott) is the assistant manager of a grocery store. When a new store is being built, he applies to become manager. His rival for the job is John C. Reilly.WHO MADE IT?Writer / director Steve Conrad wrote such films as WRESTLING ERNEST HEMINGWAY, THE WEATHER MAN, and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESSIS IT ANY GOOD?I wanted to see THE PROMOTION theatrically. Despite Jenna Fischer (who plays Scott’s wife) making the TV talk show rounds promoting the film, it never opened in my area.As the film began, with Scott narrating about his life, working at a grocery store, I was all set to start ranting about how the Weinsteins had let this fine film slip through the cracks. How couldn’t this film be released? Then, I saw more of the film.Sadly, it never comes together as much as you hope it would. The cast is good. Other than the above, the great Fred Armisen plays the manager of the grocery store, Jason Bateman has a cameo, Bobby Cannavale appears. For some unknown reason, Lili Taylor has a Scottish accent. That doesn’t quite work, but it was good to see Lili.I liked how Reilly was constantly using personalized motivation tapes. I liked Jenna Fischer. The photography of the film, by Lawrence Sher, is very nice. But, I didn’t like the film.If the film had either decided to become a low key comedy or a wacky comedy, it would have been something. It is neither, so it is nothing.WHAT IS ON THE DVD?DELETED SCENES (8 minutes) - Six deleted scenesMAKING THE PROMOTION (18 minutes) - Feature on the making of the film.THE PROMOTION WEBISODES (9 minutes) - Five webisodes promoting the film that were probably more entertaining for the filmmakers than the DVD audience.OUTTAKES (3 mintues) - All involving one scene, and they aren’t funny.THEATRICAL TRAILER (2 minutes)SHOULD I BUY IT?I wanted to love this film, as I like the cast. I couldn’t. Sadly, there is no real reason to see this film.
