Dvd Review: A Colbert Christmas (2008)

A COLBERT CHRISTMAS: THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL stars everyone’s favorite faux political pundit, Stephen Colbert. Trapped at his cabin in the woods because of a bear, he has to get to the studio since that is where Santa delivers his presents. Plus, Elvis Costello and the goats are waiting for him! While trying to figure out what to do, he is visited by various celebrity friends. Toby Keith stops by to sing a song about the “War On Christmas”, Jon Stewart sings about Hanukkah, John Legend sings about nutmeg, Feist is an angel and Willie Nelson, well, let’s just say he is the forgotten wise man. He has a line in this that could be the funniest ever delivered in a Christmas special.I have to be honest and say that I am not a regular viewer of THE COLBERT REPORT. I loved Colbert on STRANGERS WITH CANDY and in shorter bits on THE DAILY SHOW, but his satire doesn’t completely work for me.That said, he is hysterical here. You don’t have to be a fan of his to enjoy this special. The biggest surprise about this is the music. It is actually very good! It is written by Adam Schlesinger of the band Fountains of Wayne. He is also responsible for writing the theme to the Tom Hanks film THAT THING YOU DO as well as co-writing the Broadway version of CRY BABY.There is a climactic rendition of everyone singing Elvis Costello’s “Peace, Love and Understanding”.What Is On The DVD?The 43 minute special can be played with or without the laugh track. YULE LOG - An 18 minute yule log video of burning books!ADVENT CALENDAR - 25 day Advent Calendar, with a different video message from Colbert each day. ALTERNATE ENDINGS - Three alternate endings. BONUS SONG - Colbert sings “Cold Cold Christmas”Should I Get This?A COLBERT CHRISTMAS is sure to become a cult Christmas classic. His fans will love it. Even if you aren’t a regular viewer of his Comedy Central show, this is very funny. A COLBERT CHRISTMAS will be released November 25, 2008 on Comedy Central / Paramount DVD.
